News:
1.  The MIS Student Council “WISH-TV Wake-up Call” went off a little earlier than we had anticipated; therefore, here is the link from this mornings newscast:

2.   Fall Break:  We hope everybody has a safe and enjoyable Fall Break.  We look forward to seeing everybody back at school on Monday, October 19th (Gold Day).
3.  Parent/Teacher Conferences:  These will be held on October 29th and November 2nd.
4.  NASA Calendar contest open to 5th/6th Graders (please see attachments for more details):
NASA is proud to announce that they are opening their Annual Substance Abuse Awareness calendar contest for submissions to all 5th and 6th graders in Hancock County.  Please find the contest rules and a fact sheet attached.  The fact sheet can provide some quick substance abuse facts and information for students to use if they choose.
The due date for all submissions is Tuesday, October 27, at 3 PM.  If your child would like to participate, they can return them to school for pick-up.  Once again this year, the winners will be recognized at NASA’s annual meeting on Friday, November 20th from 12 PM to 2 PM.  The cover winner will receive an iPod Touch with all other monthly winners receiving an iPod Shuffle.

3. Book Fair News:

Next Thursday from 6-8 is finally Family Night at the Book Fair!!!

Highlights include:

       – GRAND prize giveaway is a Kindle
       – Free homework pass for coming
       – 6 gift baskets to be given away
       – Bookmark Bonanza game
4.  Family Literacy night will provide you with an opportunity to see what your child is doing in
     English/Language Arts Class.  This event will be Thursday from 6:30-7:30pm

1. ISTEP News:

                ISTEP will end Monday for most MIS students (those who were absent likely will still have testing to complete).  We did adjust our 5th grade schedule slightly to accommodate the time

needed to finish.  Therefore, everybody will be testing on Monday.

News:

1. ISTEP News:
Students will begin taking required practice tests over the next two weeks.  The “real” assessment will begin April 27 and run through May 4.  Please be on the lookout for specific testing dates in the teacher’s newsletter.

2.  Grandparents Luncheons:
We would like to thank the many grandparents who took the time to come dine with their grandchildren.  It is always a good time to see everybody here.  A huge thanks to our staff and PTO for putting this together.  This is a lot of work for our kitchen staff,
custodians, instructional assistants, Mrs. Elsbury as well as the ladies in the front office.  We want to give them a huge thank you for all they did to pull this off.  Also, thanks to Mrs. Elsbury for opening up the book fair last night for those folks that couldn’t make
it in during the day.  Finally, thanks to the PTO and parents who volunteered to direct folks to locations and carry trays.  It is a great help.  We look forward to seeing everybody next year.

3. Staffing Additions:
As some of you are already aware, we have two teachers who will be going or have gone on leave earlier than planned!!  We would like to welcome Miss Jacquelyn Roberts who started this week in  Mrs. Knecht-Strong’s classroom.  She joins us from Horizon
Christian Academy in Fort Wayne.  We would also like to welcome Miss Katie Strifler.  Katie will be filling in for Mrs. Sincroft starting next week.  She has been working at Maple Ridge in Pendleton for the past year.  We are excited to have them both with us for
the remainder of the year.

Please have RSVPs in by next Friday so that we can get the food order in prior to spring break.

2. Spring Book Fair:
The spring book fair will be held April 13th-17th. Mrs. Elsbury is looking for volunteers each day that week. Shifts will be 8am-12pm and 12pm-2pm each day. If you are interested or have
further questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Elsbury via phone or email (melsbury@gcsc.k12.in.us).
