1. “No Cold Feet” Shoe Recycling Challenge! –
Student Council would like for all homerooms to participate in the “No Cold Feet” Shoe Recycling Challenge! The challenge week will be January 29th – February 2nd. The class that brings in the most pairs of shoes wins a recycled plastic sports water bottle and a popcorn party. All shoes will be placed in a shoe box in each homeroom. Any unusable shoes will be ground up and turned into playground mulch! (SHOES NEED TO HAVE A RUBBER BAND AROUND EACH PAIR TO KEEP THEM TOGETHER)
2. Schoolstore.com:
Our school will be participating in the SchoolStore program this year. This online program helps our school earn cash without students selling door-to-door, collecting money or delivering products. Over 400 merchants, including Sears, Target and WalMart.com, have joined together to offer up to 50% of sales to our school for shopping through SchoolStore.com. You shop online for what you are planning to purchase anyway and support our school. Simply go to www.schoolstore.com, select our school (School code: 8981) and let the shopping begin!! Feel free to share with family members and friends.

6. CURRENT 5th GRADE PARENTS – PLEASE READ:
Vaccination Opportunity: The Hancock County Health Department will be hosting a vaccination clinic at GCHS on February 12th. The clinic will run from 2:30pm-7pm. Your student must be accompanied by an adult to receive vaccines during this clinic. For the 2018-2019 school year, students in the sixth grade are required to have two Hepatitis A, a meningococcal, and a Tdap vaccine in order to be compliant with state requirements. Hepatitis A vaccines must be given six months apart. The HCHD generally offers open clinics prior to the start of school, but you can also call and schedule an appointment or use your regular healthcare provider to receive vaccines. Due to the six month period that must pass between Hepatitis A vaccines, you should start NOW to ensure your student will not be excluded from attendance next school year. This is a walk-in clinic, no appointment necessary!
7. ISTEP Preview:
The opportunity for your child to show us what he/she has learned will be here before we know it. The Indiana Department of Education has developed a website where parents can view sample ISTEP+ items. We would encourage you to take a look at this site and discuss the importance of the exam with your child.
New this year: ISTEP+ Online Tutorial – this walks you and students through the set-up of the test as well as the tools that are available for students to use.
These sample items can be found at: http://download.pearsonaccessnext.com/in/in-practicetest.html?links=1
8. Breakfast & 2 Hour Delays:
In the event of a 2 hour delay this year, breakfast will not be served on these days. This is due to the fact that upon student arrival our lunch staff will already be in the process of prepping lunch.
9. Clinic Reminder:
All medication, including over the counter, requires a request to administer document to be completed and brought to school by a parent or guardian. The request to administer form as well as quite a bit of other health related information can be found at the following link: http://www.gcsc.k12.in.us/?page_id=590. News:
It has been a great week for our students in their extra-curricular endeavors. Last Saturday, our Robotics team participated in their first ever competition. During this event, the team was named the “Judge’s Pick” for their sportsmanship and hard work. Congratulations to them and their sponsors, Mrs. Smith and Mr. Cooper.
Last evening, our spell bowl teams represented MIS unbelievably well. The 4th grade team placed 1st in the local competition which placed them #9 in the state out of 78 teams. Our 5th/6th grade team tied for first at the local competition, but were beaten out via the tie breaker. This was good enough to place them #17 out of 113 teams in their division in the statewide rankings. This is quite an accomplishment for both of these teams. Thanks to them and Mrs. Tilley for all of the hard work during practice.
With next week being a short week, there will not be a weekly MIS News mailing on Friday. We hope everyone has a great and safe holiday break!

We were excited to see over 20% of our student body and their families come through the doors on Wednesday evening. We hope you enjoyed your time and found it educational and fun all at the same time. We had many of you enjoy pizza from Papa John’s, and we hope we can continue to grow this tradition.

Thursday, November 16th will be our Thanksgiving meal at MIS. There will be no other options served on this day as well as no extras available. The menu will be as follows:
Turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll, peaches, pumpkin pie.
Many families in our community have a difficult time buying food for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday so the K-Kids will be hosting a Thanksgiving themed food drive the week of Nov. 13-17th. This is a simple way to bring Thanksgiving to these families by donating to help feed those in need. The first homeroom to collect the following items will be rewarded with breakfast (cinnamon rolls/chocolate milk) on Monday, November 20th:
8 cans of green beans
4 boxes of stuffing
6 cans of pumpkin pie filling
4 cans of cream of mushroom soup
5 boxes of mac and cheese
6 boxes of instant mashed potatoes
Attached you will find the activities for this evening as well as the location of each. Feel free to print this, or there will be copies available at the first activity you choose to participate in. Please note that you will not have time to make it to each activity so plan ahead. As you leave for the evening, you will submit the form with teacher initials to be eligible for the prize drawings. Please remember Papa John’s pizza will be available for purchase on this evening from 5-8pm for $10/pizza. 2017 MIS Family STEM Night Flyer (1)
Hancock County families who are in need of Christmas assistance will once again be helped this year through the United Christmas Service (UCS), a division of the United Way. Greenfield-Central Schools, along with several other community agencies, will be able to refer families they are familiar with. The referral process will begin on November 1st and will continue through November 17th. Parents will be asked to complete an application, and return it to Mr. Scott Stroud, School Social Worker. This application requires information on each member of the household, such as name, gender, birth date, ethnicity, social security number, school attending, clothing sizes, and reason for need. United Christmas Service will assist as many families as possible; however, no one is guaranteed assistance.
If you would like to request a copy of the United Christmas Service application or need additional information, please contact Mr. Stroud at 326-3121.

The Indiana Department of Education requires all school corporations to conduct a Local Infrastructure Trial between November 1st and November 10th. This is the time that we test all devices that we anticipate using during ISTEP+ testing this school year. This does provide our students an opportunity to experience the format of ISTEP; however, the main purpose is to test the local infrastructure readiness for the upcoming assessments. At MIS, this test will occur the morning of November 8th and last thirty (30) minutes.
Do you love to swim in the summer? Have you ever thought about joining the swim team but didn’t want to make a year long commitment? Now is the time to try the sport of swimming.
