Principal’s Update Week of 9/15/14

  1. Purdue University High Ability Learning Opportunity

News:

1.  Attendance/Change in pick-up plans: Please call the office to make us aware of these issues.  We have had several parents contacting the teacher, and there are times when teachers cannot get to email/phone messages due to having a class full of students until well after the information should have been passed along.

2.  Book Fair – The fall book fair will be held next week.  Family Night will be Thursday, Sept.18 (6-8pm).  There will be lots of fun, prizes,  and giveaways for those that attend Family Night.  For our families with students at both MIS and Eden, we’ve tried to make it easier on you so you can visit BOTH schools’ Family Night events in the same evening.

3.   Hancock Madison Shelby Educational Services Free developmental screenings for children ages 3

Why?:  If you suspect delays in speech, readiness, motor skills, or other areas of development in your preschooler, early intervention is the best strategy to remediate these delays before kindergarten.
Who?:  Contact Janice Cassell, preschool intake coordinator or Michelle Muckerheide, school psychologist at 462-9219 to schedule a free screening.
*Early intervention matters!*  For more information about developmental milestones and educational activities for preschoolers, please visit the preschool section of the HMSES website  under the “services tab” at: http://www.hmses.org/Preschool.html

 4.  Music News: The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra opens its 85th season on Sept. 13 for “Community Day” and Sept. 14 for Opening Night Gala featuring Krzysztof Urbanski and renowned pianist Jeremy Denk! Join the ISO as it celebrates a new season and its 30th year of great performances at the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

This proposal will be presented as a first reading to the Board of School Trustees of the Greenfield-Central CSC at the regularly scheduled November 2014 Board Meeting. it is imperative that teachers, parents and community members have the opportunity to have a voice in this initiative and its planning. We have created surveys to gather this information.

1.  The surveys are ANONYMOUS.  You will have the option to put your name on your responses at the end of the survey, but this is completely optional. Please give your honest feedback.

2.  WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU! In order to make an informed decision, we need feedback from our teachers, parents and community members.

News:

  1. The character trait that we will be studying for the month of September is Responsibility. The Character First! definition of responsibility is “knowing and doing what is expected of me.” At MIS, we have defined this as “doing the right thing, at the right time.”  Responsibility is a trait that can be learned at a young age and then continued to be developed throughout one’s life.  Parents and teachers should praise and encourage responsible behavior.  The five “I will” statements for this character trait are:

a.  I will keep my promises.

b.  I will not make excuses.

c.   I will do all my work to the best of my ability.

d.  I will make things right when I do wrong.

e.  I will know my duty and do my duty.

  1. Book Fair –  The fall book fair will be held September 15th-18th.  Family Night will be Thursday, Sept.18 (times to be announced soon).  Mrs. Elsbury is looking for volunteers to work during school hours and Family Night hours.  You may contact her at melsbury@gcsc.k12.in.us or via phone 326-3121 should you be interested in helping.

  1. Water Line Hit – Our main water line was hit at approximately 1:50pm today so for about 20 minutes we were without water to drink and use to flush.  Students were not denied the opportunity to use the restroom; however, we did ask that they conserve what little water was left in the pipes if they could.  In addition, we moved the YMCA after school program to Eden so they would have water access.  We should be up and running well before Tuesday morning.

Principal Update August 15, 2014

News:

1.  GC schools received a school safety grant that has allowed us to add additional school resource officers.  Your child might see an officer in the cafeteria, hallway or a police car parked in the drive more often.  This will be a regular sight throughout the year at our building.

2.  Parking – please note that the parking lot on the south side of the building (nearest the main entrance) is available for visitor use from 8:00am-1:30pm.  If you plan to visit during this time-frame, please feel free to park in this area.  Prior to and after these times, we need this lot emptied so that we can allow bus access to the lot.  If you plan to visit before 8am or between 1:30-2:30pm, please park on the east side of the building or in the far south (near 500 north) or west (nearest playground) parking spots.

3.  The Boy Scouts of America will be visiting 4th and 5th grade lunches to share information about their program.  If your child might be interested, please encourage them to visit the designated area for this.
